THE STORY BEHIND THE PIECE
Dāstān-e-Khāk joins dāstān, story, with khāk, earth. It grew from an Urdu poem of packed fertile clay, desert sand carried on the wind, a trace of fragrance, a rising storm and desolation, and a tale nobody has told.
جمی ہوئی زرخیز مٹی،
صحرا کی اڑتی ہوئی ریت بھی،
کہیں خوشبو ہے، کہیں شور و غوغا،
طوفان، ویرانی اور کہانی اس کی۔۔۔

HOW THE ARTIST TELLS THE STORY
A heavy, dark mass fills the base, its grain swirling like ground that has settled over a long time. Above it, long ribbons sweep across the upper left like sand lifted by wind. At the center, a fan-shaped column narrows to a small carved zigzag, where fragrance stands inside desolation. SaifX Ebonform lets the ground hold still while everything above it moves.
HOW A GALLERY WOULD SHOW IT
Give it a wall of its own and soft side light. The layers step inward like terraces, and the shadows gather in each step. An ornate floral scroll border with a gilded inner edge holds the scene, because even chaos is kept somewhere.
