The EBONFORM process

How an EBONFORM work is made

Seven stages separate a drawn idea from a finished relief in figured walnut. Each one is resolved before the next begins — on paper, on screen, in the grain, and finally by hand.

Chapter 01 — Where EBONFORM begins

Every work starts with an idea.

Before the wood is carved, the work is drawn, questioned and refined. Form, message, proportion and detail are developed on paper first, so the final relief has intention before it has depth.

The sketch becomes a map for the material. Lines become edges. Shading becomes relief. The natural grain then changes the drawing again — turning an idea into something that can only exist in wood.

Chapter 02 — Design & composition

From sketch to precise form.

The drawing is translated into a controlled composition where proportion, typography, ornament, borders and carved depth are resolved before the material is cut.

Digital precision helps define the structure, but the purpose remains physical: every line must eventually become an edge, recess, texture or surface in wood.

Chapter 03 — Graphic development

From flat design to physical form.

The composition is tested as a complete structure before fabrication. The 2D drawing becomes a wireframe, the layers separate into an exploded construction view, and the final assembly reveals how every element occupies real physical depth.

This gives the artist a precise map for frame depth, carved ornament, background plane, typography, ribbon layers and inlays before the work enters the material stage.

Chapter 04 — Wood selection

The grain sets the character.

After the structure is resolved, the work meets its material. Figured walnut is selected for grain movement, tone, stability and the way its natural pattern can carry the composition.

The board is inspected and measured before carving, so the artwork responds to the real wood rather than treating it as a neutral surface.

Grain
Chosen for movement, character and visual rhythm.
Stability
Checked so the material can support precise relief work.
Tone

Chapter 05 — Precision engraving

Control the line. Establish the depth.

Once the walnut is selected, the composition moves into precision engraving. Controlled machine work establishes typography, repeat ornament and fine geometry with exact alignment across the wooden surface.

This stage creates a precise foundation for the deeper hand-led carving that follows — repeatable accuracy, applied to a material that is never perfectly uniform.

Chapter 06 — Hand crafting

The hand gives it life.

After precision engraving establishes the structure, the work returns to the hand. Edges, recesses and carved relief are refined individually so the surface develops depth, rhythm and character.

Human judgment decides where to sharpen, soften and deepen each detail, allowing light and shadow to become part of the final composition.

Chapter 07 — Finishing & detail

Tone reveals the final depth.

After carving, the surface is refined through careful finishing and polishing. The aim is to deepen the walnut, clarify the relief and keep the natural grain visible.

Every edge, recess and patterned detail is inspected by hand, so light moves cleanly across the work and the finished piece keeps its tactile character.

The artist

Art is not what you see.
Art is what you can touch,
to feel the story,
to feel the characters.
